THUNDERBALL
The second best raunchy James Bond title after Octopussy. What sinks Thunderball is the deliberate attempt to outdo everything about Goldfinger. From the opening titles and bombastic song by Tom Jones, to the scheme by SPECTRE to blackmail NATO with the threat of launching stolen nuclear missiles, to the prolonged (but still spectacular) climactic underwater action sequences Thunderball's story and characters are scuttled by the desire to be Bigger! and Better! than Goldfinger. Sean Connery begins to show signs of boredom playing 007, especially in the sequences in Nassau, which are too similar to the Jamaica scenes in Dr. No. On the plus side, Claudine Auger as Domino and Luciana Paluzzi as SPECTRE assassin Fiona Volpe are drop dead gorgeous; yet they are two of most unheralded Bond Girls in the entire franchise.
